The Guess Who

The Guess Who

1987

Winner of 2 JUNO Awards, 4 nominations

In 1965, Canadian musicians were finding it difficult to crack radio playlists – Canadian content legislation had yet to be passed.  Out of frustration with this situation, Winnipeg band Chad Allen and the Expressions released their single “Shakin’ All Over” purposely leaving their name off the dust jacket and label.  The tactic worked.  DJs were beside themselves over this anonymous sensation.  They were quickly dubbed Guess Who, and the name stuck.

Five years later, after several personnel changes, the Guess Who were at the top of the American Hot 100 with their hit “American Woman”.  This followed chart topping success for “Shakin’ All Over” in 1965, and Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings first hit “These Eyes” in 1969.Bachman exited the band in the early seventies to form Bachman Turner Overdrive.  Cummings continued with the Guess Who until 1975, when the band was dissolved to make way for Cummings’ solo career.  It started off with a bang in 1977 with the Top Ten hit “Stand Tall”.

Bachman and Cummings have recently reunited to tour and record new material.
